The Cabinet on Thursday approved the Union government’s proposal to resume mining activities on tailing dumps attached to Bharat Gold Mines Ltd (BGML) in Kolar district. This decision comes under Section 17 of the MMDR (Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Amendment) Act, allowing mining in 13 tailing dumps spanning 1,003.4 acres.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil announced the Cabinet’s approval, highlighting the potential employment opportunities this move will bring to the region. The state government has also requested the transfer of 2,330 acres of BGML’s defunct property to establish an industrial park, compensating for arrears amounting to Rs 75.24 crore.
