KGF: A mild earthquake was experienced in Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) and nearby areas on Thursday at approximately 11:30 a.m. Scientists speculate that the tremors may have originated from within the tunnel of the Mysore Mines area, a former mining site.

According to NIRM scientist Rajan Babu, the tremors were less pronounced as they occurred slightly below ground level. He noted that when the BGML gold mine was operational, frequent earthquakes occurred due to rock movement inside the tunnel, especially during the rainy season. However, since the mine’s closure and the flooding of the tunnel, the vibration intensity has decreased.

The tremors were felt in KGF, Bangarapet, and Betamangala, but no damage was reported. A seismograph installed at NIRM in the city could not measure the extent of the vibrations, as it has not been used recently.
