Kothur G. Manjunath, Congress MLA from Kolar, has ignited a major controversy following his contentious remarks about the Indian Army’s recent military response dubbed “Operation Sindoor.” The mission was carried out after a terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 soldiers.
In a public statement, Manjunath questioned the scale and transparency of the operation. He claimed that aside from dispatching a few jets, there appeared to be no substantial military retaliation. He also cast doubt on the claim that over 100 terrorists were neutralised, insisting that no official proof had been presented to back these assertions.
His statements were perceived as dismissive of the armed forces’ efforts, triggering sharp backlash from the BJP and other political groups. Critics accused Manjunath of disrespecting national security personnel and using sensitive issues for political mileage. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi termed the remarks “irresponsible” and demoralising for the armed forces.
In light of public anger, a police complaint was filed against Manjunath at the Banashankari Police Station in Bengaluru, charging him with making derogatory comments that hurt national sentiment.
Reacting to the uproar, Manjunath clarified that his words were misunderstood. He said his intent was not to insult the military but to demand accountability and justice for the fallen soldiers.
Despite his clarification, the damage was done. The incident has intensified the political storm in Karnataka, raising questions about the fine line between free speech and national interest.
