Kolar: Kolar District has reported 156 fatalities from road accidents over the past seven months, showing a decrease compared to last year’s toll of 250. Despite this improvement, the district police are actively working to further reduce accidents and fatalities. Alok Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for Traffic and Road Safety, has praised the efforts of officers and staff in improving road safety across the state.

The majority of road accident victims are two-wheeler riders, and there has been a notable increase in the number of injuries. A recent tragic accident on the Kolar-Bangarapet main road underscored the dangers of speeding, resulting in the deaths of two students and their friend. This highlights the persistent issue of high-speed collisions.

While the KGF Police jurisdiction has seen a reduction in road accident deaths, Kolar District Police have reported 71 fatalities in the last three months, a slight increase compared to the previous year. In 2023, Kolar District experienced 250 fatal accidents and 516 ordinary accidents, resulting in 257 deaths and 778 injuries.

Kolar District Superintendent of Police Nikhil B. and KGF Superintendent of Police K. M. Shantaraju are spearheading efforts to curb accidents through a combination of technology and public awareness. Nikhil B. has stressed the critical role of helmet usage for two-wheeler riders in reducing fatalities.

Speeding, particularly on National Highway 75, remains a significant cause of accidents. Increased incidents have been reported in Kolar rural, Vemagal, and surrounding areas. Carelessness and excessive speed are the primary contributors to road accidents, with two-wheeler riders being disproportionately affected.

To address these issues, the police have mandated helmet use and launched various operations to enforce traffic laws. The Public Works Department (PWD) has also taken proactive measures by identifying high-risk accident sites and installing warning signs. Additionally, technology such as speed radar and “cat eye” installations are being utilized to manage and control speeding on both national and state highways.

The reduction in road accident fatalities in Kolar District is a positive development, but ongoing efforts are crucial to further improve road safety. With the implementation of stricter regulations, technological advancements, and increased public awareness, authorities aim to continue reducing accidents and saving lives.
