In a remarkable development, the Bankapur Wolf Sanctuary in Koppal’s Gangavathi taluk has become a significant site for the conservation of the Indian grey wolf. Over the last two Decembers, the sanctuary has witnessed the birth of eight wolf pups each year, a rare and encouraging event for this endangered species.
A Special Cradle for the Wolves
- The pups were born in a natural den located on top of a hill, which has become the focal point of wolf activity.
- Nagappa, a dedicated watcher at the sanctuary, shared that for the past two decades, wolves have been giving birth at this very den. However, he noted that eight pups being born in a litter is a remarkable occurrence, with the largest previous litter being six pups.
Why the Surge in Wolf Births?
- Experts attribute the increase in wolf births to the protection granted to the sanctuary in 2021, when 340 hectares of dry scrub and grassland around the den were officially declared a protected area.
- This protection has provided a safer environment for wolves to breed and rear their pups.
Potential “Maternity Ward” for Wolves
- Forest officials believe that the sanctuary could be home to three to four packs of Indian grey wolves. With the increased safety and suitable environment, the sanctuary is evolving into an ideal breeding ground, often referred to as a “maternity ward” for the species.
Significance for Conservation
This development is not only significant for the Indian grey wolf but also for wildlife conservation in general. The birth of healthy pups in a protected environment could lead to the rejuvenation of the local wolf population, which has been dwindling in some areas.
🔹 What measures should be taken to ensure the continued success of such breeding sites? Continued protection of natural habitats and monitoring of the wolf population can play a crucial role in supporting sustainable growth for this endangered species.
