Across the villages of Kallu Tavaragera, Kamanur, Indaragi, Jabbalaguda, Bhudagumpa, Vadalugallu, Vanaballari, Hatti, Ginigera, Irakallagada, Hanumanbatti, Matagallu, Halahalli, Bhimanur, and Guldahalli, a unique trend stands out—every household cultivates mangoes. This makes Koppal the first district in North Karnataka with thousands of dedicated mango farmers.

Many cultivators in these villages focus solely on mango production, reaping significant financial rewards. A decade ago, mango farming was rare here. However, with the Koppal horticulture department conducting agricultural fairs, practical training, and expert-led sessions, an increasing number of farmers switched to mango orchards. The department also assisted in selling their produce, boosting incomes and inspiring thousands to embrace mango cultivation.

Today, mangoes from Koppal are sought after in neighboring states, with the Kesar variety even reaching international markets. Most farmers prefer Kesar due to its high returns. Interestingly, a grower from Yelburga taluk has ventured into cultivating Miyazaki, a premium Japanese mango variety.

“If one travels through these villages, they’ll find mango trees in every home,” say farmers from Tavaragera. “Once, we struggled with farming, but mangoes have transformed our fortunes. Now, cultivators from other regions visit us to learn better techniques.”

Deputy Director of Horticulture, Krishna Ukkunda, affirms, “Through workshops, schemes, and expert guidance, we helped farmers establish successful orchards. ‘Koppal Kesar’ has now gained international recognition.”
