Koppal: Violent Clash Erupts Over Public Toilets, Injuring Over 30 Dalits
In a troubling incident in Jampura village, Karatagi taluk, more than 30 members of the Dalit community sustained serious injuries after an altercation with upper caste individuals. The violence erupted as the Dalits opposed the construction of public toilets near their colony, insisting that the facilities be built on government land elsewhere in the village.
The injured victims are currently receiving medical care at Karatagi Sub-divisional Hospital, Gangavathi Sub-divisional Hospital, and Koppal District Hospital. Reports indicate that this dispute is not new; the Dalit community had previously expressed concerns about the toilet’s location, prompting meetings with local authorities such as the Panchayat Development Officer, Taluk Officer, and Tahsildar in efforts to find a peaceful solution.
The Karatagi Police have registered a case against 28 individuals in connection with the assault, although no arrests have been made thus far. Tensions in the village have escalated in the absence of government officials from these discussions, ultimately leading to the recent violent confrontation.
