Police in Kanakagiri have detained Chethan Kumar Bokkasad (34) for the shocking death of his octogenarian grandmother, Kanakamma Nagappa Bokkasad (82).
Investigators say the unemployed suspect regularly leaned on relatives for money. Around midday Friday he went to Kanakamma’s home in Ward 13 and asked for ₹100. She declined, gently advising him to approach his father, Venkatesh, instead. Enraged, Chethan allegedly grabbed a heavy grinding stone from the kitchen and struck her on the head.
Neighbours rushed to help, but the grievously injured woman died en route to hospital. Venkatesh filed a formal complaint, prompting Kanakagiri police to arrest Chethan within hours and recover the murder weapon. Officers have opened a case of culpable homicide and are arranging a psychiatric evaluation to determine if substance abuse or mental distress played a role.
Local residents are stunned that a minor cash request escalated into patricidal violence, highlighting concerns over unemployment‑driven frustration and elder safety. Civic groups are urging authorities to expand counselling and financial‑aid outreach for jobless adults, as well as awareness programmes on elder abuse.
Kanakamma, remembered as a kind figure who regularly donated food at the nearby temple, will be cremated on Saturday after post‑mortem formalities. The family has appealed for privacy while they process the tragedy and await justice through the courts.
