Tata Ace overturns in Koppal: 31 NREGA labourers hurt, 3 critical
In a troubling road mishap in Koppal district, 31 workers employed under the NREGA scheme were injured when the Tata Ace vehicle ferrying them overturned near Baraguru Cross in Karatagi taluk.
The group, hailing from Mustur village panchayat, was en route to their job site when the small goods carrier lost control and toppled, causing panic and chaos.
According to officials, three individuals suffered grievous injuries and were immediately referred to specialty hospitals—Hubballi and KIMS in Koppal—for advanced medical care. The remaining 28 labourers sustained minor wounds and were transported to the Gangavati Taluk Hospital for treatment.
News of the accident prompted Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi to personally visit the injured at the hospital, offering support and assurances of proper care. His visit underscored the seriousness of the incident, which occurred under the jurisdiction of Karatagi police station.
Authorities have begun a preliminary inquiry to determine whether overloading, rash driving, or poor vehicle condition led to the accident. Locals have expressed concerns over the unsafe transport conditions under which daily wage workers are often ferried to worksites.
The incident has reignited calls for safer and regulated transportation methods for rural labourers, especially those employed under government schemes. Many have urged authorities to review transport policies and improve oversight to prevent such tragedies.
