Unregulated Homestays in Hampi Raise Tourist Safety Concerns
KOPPAL: The number of unauthorized homestays around Hampi is rising due to weak enforcement, putting visitors at risk. The issue gained attention after the shocking gang-rape near Sanapur Lake, prompting a police crackdown on Monday night.
Officials from the tourism departments in Koppal and Vijayanagara districts admitted that not a single homestay in the Hampi World Heritage Area is officially registered. Though no exact figures exist, locals estimate around 230 unapproved homestays in Kamalapur, Kaddirampur, and New Hampi alone, while the number in Anegundi, Anjanadri, Basapur, and Sanapur remains unknown.
These unlicensed lodgings operate without police verification, local body approvals, or tourism department clearance, raising serious security concerns. Registration would enforce safety measures, including restrictions on late-evening outings and mandatory guest guidelines. However, Koppal Tourism Deputy Director Nagaraj D claimed his department lacks authority to enforce registration. Vijayanagara Tourism Deputy Director Prabhulinga S T confirmed that none of the existing homestays have official clearance.
Homestay operators blame administrative confusion, citing unclear guidelines on approval procedures. Meanwhile, tour guide Manjunath Gouda stressed the need for government-supported budget stays.
Following the Sanapur incident, authorities have ordered homestays to comply with regulations. During Monday’s raid, Koppal SP Ram L Arasiddi cracked down on illegal alcohol service and seized 15 unregistered rental bikes. Officials have now mandated CCTV installation, guest record maintenance, and official registration for all homestay operators.
