Bagepalli: The village gateway at Krishnapura, located in Kottakote Gram Panchayat, stands as a testament to the community’s rich heritage and sense of unity. This iconic structure, constructed with four stone pillars and a gopuram-style arch, is not just an architectural feature but a symbol of tradition, culture, and communal harmony. Over the decades, it has served as a central gathering point during auspicious events, welcoming both visitors and the local community to celebrate their shared heritage.
The gateway, with its beautifully crafted deity images and spaces for oil lamps, has been a prominent feature in the village for over seven decades. Built near a temple that once served as a hub for families from diverse communities, the gateway was designed to welcome guests, including farmers bringing their cattle into the village. Its role as a central meeting point has been pivotal in fostering a sense of unity within Krishnapura, which is home to over 100 families today.
Krishnapura’s legacy dates back to the rule of local chieftains who governed the area for 560 years. During their reign, similar gateways were constructed at the entrance of every village in the taluk, often to welcome royalty, esteemed guests, and officials. The tradition continued even after the royal rule ended, and the gateways became a place for official meetings, with local authorities such as police, revenue officers, and the Gram Panchayat holding gatherings there.
Even today, the gateway continues to play an integral role in village life. Tax collectors uphold the tradition of collecting dues at the gateway, maintaining a longstanding custom. During festivals, villagers adorn the entrance with limewash, green banners, banana stems, sugarcane stalks, and an array of lights. It is customary for the first offering of oil lamps to be placed at the gateway during village fairs, as a mark of respect and reverence.
Lakshmareddy, a village elder, explains the gateway’s enduring significance: “Despite changing times, we have preserved this gateway. During festivals, we welcome dignitaries through this entrance. It has become a place that unites our community.” The sense of collective identity fostered by the gateway is evident in the strong communal bonds that have persisted over the years.
The legacy of the gateway and its connection to the village’s history is also highlighted by Ramesh, a local advocate, who recalls stories passed down from his grandfather. “Our ancestors built this gateway,” he says. “The government should work to restore such historical structures, including gates, forts, and temples from the chieftain era. It is essential for the youth to continue these traditions and practices passed down by our forefathers.”
The gateway of Krishnapura is more than just a structure; it is a living symbol of the village’s rich history, culture, and unity. It continues to serve as a focal point for celebrations, gatherings, and the preservation of ancestral customs. In a rapidly changing world, this simple but significant gateway reminds the people of Krishnapura of the importance of tradition, community, and shared heritage.
