In a significant development, P. Sivaprasad, the Chief Officer of Kunigal Municipality, has been suspended from service by the Director of the Municipal Administration Directorate. The suspension order follows an investigation that uncovered serious lapses in the revenue, technical, health, and accounting branches of the municipality for the year 2022-23.

The investigation, prompted by a government complaint against Sivaprasad, revealed several irregularities. These included delayed monitoring of deposit works executed through piecemeal contracts, resulting in losses to the municipal fund. Additionally, unauthorised contracts were awarded for the installation of motor pumps, pipeline materials, and tube well works, causing financial losses to the municipality.

Other irregularities involved the lack of demand for business licences, inadequate motor vehicle management leading to defects, and improper accounting practices. Accounts were maintained in buffer zone areas outside municipal jurisdiction, and several commercial shops owned by the municipality had unpaid dues.

These findings led the Director of Municipal Administration to take strict action against Sivaprasad, emphasising the need for accountability and transparency in governance. This development highlights the importance of oversight and investigation in ensuring that public officials uphold the highest standards of integrity.

Sivaprasad has faced controversy before, with previous cases filed against him in the Karnataka High Court. The current suspension order marks a significant escalation in the proceedings against him. The Kunigal Municipality has long been plagued by allegations of mismanagement and irregularities.

This incident underscores the need for vigilant monitoring and swift action to maintain public trust in local governance institutions. The suspension order is likely to be followed by further investigations and potential legal action against Sivaprasad. The Directorate of Municipal Administration will continue to monitor the situation and ensure that corrective measures are implemented to prevent similar irregularities in the future.

The people of Kunigal await the outcome of the investigations, hoping that justice will be served and that those responsible will be held accountable. As the municipality moves forward, it is essential that transparency and accountability be prioritised to restore public faith in the institution.
