Leaked Karnataka Caste Census Sparks Uproar Ahead of Key Cabinet Meet
A leaked draft of Karnataka’s caste census report has stirred political tensions, particularly within the ruling Congress party. The Socioeconomic and Educational Survey, informally known as the caste census, recommends raising the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 32% to 51%, and for Muslims—from 4% to 8%. Notably, Muslims are classified under the OBC category.
This suggestion has ignited backlash from leaders across various communities, who’ve labeled the report “unscientific” and are demanding the state government discard it. The controversy unfolds just ahead of a special cabinet session scheduled for April 17, called by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to deliberate on the findings. The report was formally submitted to the cabinet last Friday, with all ministers receiving copies on Sunday to review and prepare for the meeting.
Although the leaked document doesn’t detail the population proportions of Karnataka’s two dominant caste groups—Vokkaligas and Lingayats—it outlines proposed reservations within broader categories that include both. These groups, often seen as political rivals, are expected to be significantly affected by the new quota restructuring.
The situation presents a complex challenge for the Congress-led government, which must navigate community sensitivities, internal dissent, and potential electoral repercussions.
