Magadi: Leopard Electrocuted in Farm, Farmer Surrenders
A leopard tragically lost its life after coming into contact with an electric wire set up in a farm in Magadi on Saturday night. The farmer, Umesh, surrendered to the police on Sunday following the incident.
Umesh, a resident of Maralagondala village, had installed the electric wire around his sweet potato crop to deter wild boars. Unfortunately, a 4-year-old leopard came into contact with the wire and was electrocuted. Out of fear of the repercussions, Umesh buried the leopard on his farm but later surrendered himself to the police.
Forest officials, including Magadi Range Forest Officer Chaitra and DRF Shobha, visited the site, exhumed the leopard’s body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination. A case has been registered against Umesh, and an investigation is underway.
This incident underscores the ongoing conflict between wildlife and human activities, highlighting the urgent need for alternative methods to protect crops without endangering wildlife.
