Chikkamagaluru: The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) landed in Chikkamagaluru on Wednesday to investigate the case of kidnap for ransom in which Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) Kallappa Handibag was one of the accused. According to sources said that two teams are in the town for investigation.
The DySp reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday at his wife’s maternal house at Murgod in Belagavi.
One team with Director General of Police, Sonia Narang, and Superintendent of police, Heidi Martin visited the house where Kallappa committed suicide and questioned the family. The officials also spoke to doctors at KLE Hospital Belagavi who conducted the postmortem and collected information.
Another team lead by CID superintendent of police, D Rajappa, visited the police quarters where the DySP allegedly kept the cash he received from Tejas Gowda’s friends, apart from the Basavanahalli Police Station where the case was registered. Later, the officers reached Gowda’s residence.
Nataraj, a financier; Praveen Khandya, Bajrang Dal leader; Abhijeet, Naveen Shetty and Shivu are the other accused in the case.
It may be recalled that a gang of 23 gamblers were gambling at a den in Chikkakolale village here in June when PSI raided and arrested 23 persons. One of the 23 persons arrested was Tejas Gowda who later got bail. He was later kidnapped by a gang, taken to Bengaluru and was demanded Rs 10 lakh as ransom. DySP Kallappa was said to be involved in the entire abduction and ransom episode.
The mortal remains of Kallappa Handibag were brought to his native place at 11.30 pm on Tuesday and buried around 3 a.m. on Wednesday. Kallapa’s batch mates, police officials from Chikkamagaluru and Raibag, realtives and villagers were present.
