Customers allege illegal sand mining, extortion by lorry owners

Chikkamagaluru: The customers have complained about illegal sand mining from river Hemavathi in Mudigere taluk and have also said that the lorry owners were extorting money.

District administration has come forward to distribute sand to customers especially beneficiaries of housing, buildings from last month from Hireshigara, Kanachur, G Agrahara, Chakkudige stock yards.

Following complaints that lorry owners are extorting extra money, the DC had convened a meeting with the lorry owners. The DC had fixed Rs 4500 to be collected in Mudigere and surrounding places, Rs 6500 in Chikkamagaluru and Rs 7500 in Tarikere for sand transportation from the stock yard. But it is learnt that the lorry owners have defied the DC order and are collecting extra money from the customers.

The customers alleged that the lorry owners demand Rs 5000 for sand loading, Rs 750 for unloading and driver charges of Rs 300 in Mudigere. For full load they charge extra Rs 3000 and also demand additional Rs 3000 for loading work in stock yard.
