Chikkamagaluru: The plans to lay an Aerial Tramway Cable Car between Seethalaiahnagiri-Mullaiahnagiri to Rathnagiribore in the city has been condemned by the environmentalists on the grounds that the project would affect the eco-sensitivity and bio-diversity of the region.
Bhadra Conservation Society head D V Girish and Wildcat-C Society member Sridev Hulikere in a statement have said that the proposal has been submitted by MP Shobha Karandalaje to the Central government, which must be opposed.
They have said that when the proposal to install windmills here was mooted, even the Court upheld that the region is extremely sensitive and hence even installation of windmills should not be permitted. In such a situation having cable cars would only further affect the ecology, they argued adding that the project would leave the hills scarred and bruised, also affecting the plants, trees and animal species.
The conservationists have said that large numbers of migratory birds like the Falcons, Black Vultures, Short winged birds etc fly to the hills during specific seasons for breeding and the project would turn out detrimental to these migratory birds as well.
They have demanded the government to chalk out plans only after considering the impact of the same on the nature and ecology.
