Hassan: In a tragic incident, a female elephant named Kanti lost her life while attempting to drink water from a lake in a coffee plantation in Mathasagara village of Sakleshpur taluk.
Kanti, a 25-year-old elephant and leader of a group of 21 wild elephants, collapsed and became stuck in the muddy terrain as she approached the lake last night. Despite efforts by the forest department staff, Kanti could not be saved.
Recently fitted with a radio collar to monitor her movements, Kanti had given birth to a baby elephant and was an important member of the local wildlife community. Forest department officials are investigating the incident and have visited the site.
