Shivamogga: The representatives of the Arehalla Parisara Rakshana Vedike submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner complaining about the rampant illegal mining at the Arehalla in Thirthahalli Taluk here on July 13.
Talking to media at the DC office here, President of the Organisation L K Muralidhar said that Arehalla is a major tributary of Sharavati River in Theerthahalli. The area around the rivulet is surrounded by dense forests. The water from the rivulet is used by the villages for drinking and irrigation purposes.
Muralidhar alleged that a person in the locality had illegally encroached upon the government land and started illegal stone quarry. “A bridge constructed across the rivulet has also been damaged by that person” he said.
Further, he said, “Repeated complaints to the taluk level officials have not borne fruit. So we have approached the district administration to take stern action.”
The activists also demanded the officials to stop the illegal stone quarry and protect the environment in the Western Ghat.
The activists also warned that they would protest in front of the gram panchayat office if no action was initiated.
