Shivamogga: S.N. Channabasappa, Former city municipal president and district BJP general secretary who was detained on Tuesday on charges of making a controversial comment of beheading the CM if he dared consume beef was granted conditional bail on Wednesday.

After the 2nd JMFC Court granted him bail, he spoke to media persons and said, “I will obey the court orders and not say anything more.”

Counsel for Raghavendra, BJP national vice-president B.S. Yeddyurappa’s son, argued in favour of the BJP leader and appealed for bail. The judge, Jayaprakash, heard the arguments.

S.N. Channabasappa was detained, after a complaint was registered against him, by P.V. Vishwanath, president of the Congress city unit and a member of Shivamogga City Corporation with Doddapet police station on Tuesday. He was accused of posing a threat to the life of the Chief Minister and was also trying to disturb peace in the region by making provocative statements.

Earlier, CM Siddaramaiah taking a stand on the ongoing beef controversy had made a statement that he was not scared of the BJP or rightwing activists. “I have not eaten beef so far, but I am free to eat whenever and whatever I like. This is my fundamental right guaranteed under the Constitution,” he said.

Speaking during a protest held on November 2 condemning the CM’s statement that he would eat beef if he wanted to, S N Channabasappa, a former president of the erstwhile Shivamogga City Municipal Council made the statement, “If he wants to eat beef, let him eat it here at Gopi Circle. Hindu activists and I will surely behead him. There is no second thought to it.”
