Shivamogga: This Malnad district have pride of contributing largest number of chief ministers to the state. But all the four chief ministers from this district did not complete full-term.
Former chief ministers Kadidal Manjappa, S. Bangarappa, J. H. Patel and B.S. Yeddyurappa hails from Shivamogga. The first three has less opportunity but despite Yeddyurappa having the opportunity, he exits the post.
Senior leader and Gandhian Kadidal Manjappa was elected from Teerthahalli constituency in the year 1952. He became chief minister followed by resignation of chief minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah. Manjappa was in seat from 1956 August 19 to October 31, for 73 days. The five-year term ended.
In the year 1989 S. Bangarappa was elected from Soraba constituency from Congress party. He became chief minister followed by resignation of Veerendra Patil. Bangarappa was in power from 1990 October 17 to 1992 November 19. He resigned for political reasons.
Socialist J. H. Patel was elected from Chennagiri constituency from Janata dal party. He became chief minister when H. D. Deve Gowda became prime minister of the country. He was in power from 1996 March 31 to October 7, 1999.
The present chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa has credit of becoming chief minister for multiple times. He continuously won from Shikaripura constituency. Yeddyurappa became chief minister for 7 days in the year 2007. Later he resigned when JDS could not support him. Again, he became CM in May 30, 2008. Though he has opportunity to complete full term he resigned to post on July 31, 2011. Again, he took oath on May 17, 2008 for third time. But he exits post within 55 hours as he did not have majority. On fourth time Yeddyurappa became CM on 2019, July 26 but resigned followed by instruction from high command.
