Shivamogga: The Government has taken many proactive steps to develop the Gram Panchayats (GP) and hence the GPs have been entrusted with the responsibility of developing the lake and ponds in their jurisdiction, said Rural Development, Panchayat Raj and District In-charge Minister K. S. Eshwarappa.

He was speaking after inaugurating of the Solid Waste Disposal Unit at Antaragange Gram Panchayat of Bhadravathi Taluk on Monday July 5. The GPs will be able to undertake water conservation work as the village ponds and lakes will be managed by the GPs. The responsibility of implementing many government schemes lies with Gram Panchayats and as such all projects should be adequately implemented. All GP Presidents, Vice Presidents and PDOs will be given training on implementation of such projects, the Minister asserted.

He said as 13 crore human days, which were allotted under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, were completed in December itself, an additional 2 crore human days have been earned. A solid waste management complex will be built in every GP. Henceforth, even in the rural areas, the garbage collection vehicle should be assigned to collect waste instead of it being dumped in the garbage bin. He said all the Gram Panchayats have been instructed to start solid waste disposal units as soon as possible.

The vehicle given to the Gram Panchayat for the collection of solid waste was also launched at the occasion.
