Sigandur: The incident in Sigandur was not a shock to anyone, said Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today in the matter. He added that the issue will be discussed with district officials and leaders.

It can be recalled that recently, the brother of the chief priest of Chowdeshwari Temple in Sigandur assaulted a member of the temple management after a spat over the Navaratri celebrations. A video of the incident went viral on Friday, after which the state government sought a report from the Shivamogga district administration.

The Chowdeshwari temple is privately managed by Ramappa and his family, while Sheshagiri Bhat was appointed as the temple priest. The Sagar police informed that Ramappa and chief priest Sheshagiri Bhat have been at odds with each other over the last few months. The assault occurred after the temple management refused to grant permission to conduct the Chandika homa during Navaratri.

The CM was in the district after arriving from Bengaluru to launch tomorrow’s irrigation works.

Speaking to reporters here, he said that there is a huge demand to bring the Sigandur temple under the Muzrai Department. He said this in response to a question regarding the government’s stand on the matter. He expressed his disappointment over the incident saying that “this incident shouldn’t have happened in the temple”.

“We have taken note of the incident and will discuss the same with leaders Sagar MLA Hartalu Halappa and Sorab MLA Kumar Bangarappa,” he said.

The CM is expected to be in Shikaripur till October 20.
