A 33-year-old man has been arrested after he allegedly climbed onto a parked truck loaded with cooking gas cylinders and set one of them on fire early Saturday morning near Thalayolaparambu in Kottayam district, according to police reports. Suspect reportedly under mental distress, FIR filed under multiple sections
Police said the suspect claimed to be travelling on foot from Ernakulam to his home in Marangattupilly when he came across the parked truck. He is believed to be under mental distress, though investigations are ongoing. @mathrubhumi
An FIR has been registered under sections 329(3) (criminal trespass), 324(2) (mischief), and 326(f) (mischief by fire or explosive substance) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said these are bailable offences, and the accused will be released on station bail to his family pending further investigation. @mathrubhumi
Company loss minimal but public risk high
According to the cooking-gas company transporting the cylinders, the immediate financial loss due to the incident was around ₹2,300. The truck’s load was otherwise recovered safely, and no further damage was reported. @mathrubhumi
Though material losses were small, authorities emphasised that the act could have led to a major catastrophe given the explosive nature of LPG cylinders and the proximity of houses and traffic. The prompt action of fire services averted likely casualties or injuries.
Police appeal for calm, investigation continues
Local police urged residents not to panic and stated that the investigation is ongoing. They will examine the suspect’s mental condition as well as motives behind the act. Meanwhile, community leaders called for stronger monitoring of parked vehicles carrying hazardous substances, especially in residential zones.
Authorities are assessing whether negligence or intent led to the incident, and have appealed to citizens to report suspicious behaviour around such vehicles.
Broader concerns over safety and mental health awareness
The incident has sparked a broader conversation in the region about public safety, hazardous-material transport regulations, and mental health support. Experts say this underlines the importance of strict surveillance of LPG transport, regular safety audits, and community mental-health outreach in rural and semi-urban areas.
