In a shocking incident, a man lost his life after a live fish became lodged in his throat while he was fishing in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district.
Tragic accident during fishing
The victim, identified as Abinash Bijuli from Dighi village under Bangriposi police limits, had gone fishing in a local pond on Friday morning.
According to reports, he caught a ‘Kau’ fish, commonly known as the climbing perch. In an attempt to prevent it from slipping away, he reportedly placed the live fish in his mouth.
Fish gets lodged in airway
The situation turned fatal when the fish suddenly wriggled deeper into his throat and got stuck in his airway, blocking his breathing.
Abinash began choking and struggled to breathe, but despite immediate efforts by those present, he could not be saved and died due to suffocation.
Allegations over medical response
Family members rushed him to a nearby medical facility in Bangriposi. However, the victim’s relatives alleged that the response at the hospital was inadequate.
The victim’s uncle claimed that doctors behaved harshly and threatened to refer the case elsewhere without providing immediate treatment.
Police and medical concerns
Authorities are expected to look into the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the response at the medical facility.
Medical experts note that airway obstruction from foreign objects can lead to rapid suffocation, requiring immediate emergency intervention.
Rare but preventable tragedy
The incident highlights the dangers of unsafe practices during fishing and handling live catch. Experts advise against placing objects in the mouth, especially live animals, due to the risk of choking.
The tragic death has left the local community in shock, underlining the need for awareness around basic safety practices.
