Student admissions in government schools are steadily decreasing, prompting Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah to call for immediate intervention. Speaking at the progress review meeting held at the District Panchayat Cauvery Hall on Wednesday, the legislator expressed deep concern over the enrolment drop.

Despite 75 schools in the Melukote constituency achieving commendable academic performance, parents are still leaning toward private schools. Puttannaiah noted that this trend needs urgent attention. He urged block education officers, school principals, and KSRTC to work together to provide reliable transportation, ensuring that students face no hurdles in reaching school as the new academic year begins.

He also directed Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) to report villages with transport issues, so that necessary steps can be taken to resolve them swiftly. Raising community awareness about the value and progress of government schools was highlighted as a top priority.

The MLA stressed the importance of inspecting school infrastructure to ensure clean classrooms, functioning toilets, and safe learning environments. He insisted on maintaining strict hygiene standards during the mid-day meal programme, with the use of quality grains and fresh vegetables being non-negotiable.

Darshan Puttannaiah concluded by stating that improving public perception through transparency, safety, and quality can help bring more children back to government schools.
