Two teenagers, Muthuraju (14) and Ranju (17), lost their lives to drowning while swimming in Sri Madduramma Lake in Mandya district on Sunday. The boys, residents of Shankarpur village, were part of a group of five friends who had gone to the lake for a swim around 5 PM.
According to Besagaralli police sub-inspector B. Sathish Kumar, the group initially swam near the shore for about half an hour before Muthuraju and Ranju ventured into deeper waters and struggled to return. The remaining friends panicked and fled the scene. Local villagers suggested that the presence of silt in the lake may have contributed to the drowning.
Rescue efforts were initiated promptly, with Muthuraju’s body recovered on Sunday night and Ranju’s on Monday morning. An autopsy was conducted at the Mandya district government hospital, and the bodies were returned to their families. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
