Bantwal: Bantwal Town Police have detained a 13-year-old boy in connection with a harassment case reported in the Panemangalore market area, raising concerns over public safety and juvenile delinquency.

Incident details

The incident occurred a few days ago between 7.30 pm and 8 pm, when several women returning home after work were allegedly subjected to inappropriate behaviour by a scooter rider. Disturbed by the harassment, one of the victims filed a complaint at the Bantwal Town Police Station, leading to the registration of a case under Crime No. 95/2025, invoking Section 74(B) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.

Investigation and arrest

Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation and scrutinised CCTV footage from the market area and surrounding streets. The footage helped identify the minor suspect, who resides with his parents near Panemangalore.

On August 26, 2025, the police traced the boy and took him into custody. Officials stated that the boy was riding a scooter and allegedly engaged in harassing women, creating fear and discomfort among passers-by.

Juvenile produced before court

The minor was interrogated in the presence of his mother, and his statement was recorded. Subsequently, he was produced before the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Mangaluru. The JJB directed that the boy be sent to an observation home until September 2, 2025, pending further proceedings.

Community reaction and safety measures

The incident has sparked discussions in the Bantwal region regarding the increasing involvement of juveniles in unlawful activities and the need for early intervention. Authorities have urged parents to monitor the activities of their children and guide them towards responsible behaviour.

Police also stated that awareness drives would be conducted in schools and neighbourhoods to educate minors about the legal consequences of misconduct, particularly against women.

Ongoing legal process

Further investigation is underway to establish whether the minor was acting alone or under external influence. Authorities are also examining whether the scooter was being used without a valid driving licence, which could attract additional penalties for the guardians under the Motor Vehicles Act.
