20 held in Wayanad man’s lynching in Mangaluru
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah has termed any slogans in favour of Pakistan as “betrayal of the nation” and treason, while commenting on the April 27 lynching of Mohammad Ashraf, a native of Wayanad, Kerala, in Kudupu, Mangaluru. Ashraf was allegedly beaten to death by a mob after a scuffle during a local cricket match, where he was accused of raising pro-Pakistan slogans. The CM said an inquiry is ongoing and affirmed that “the guilty will not be spared.”
Police have arrested 20 individuals so far, including Sachin, an autorickshaw driver who reportedly initiated the attack, and others who joined in the assault with sticks and kicks. Ashraf died of internal injuries and shock. His body was buried after funeral prayers at Zeenath Baksh Juma Masjid, and later transported to Kerala.
The CPM has demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under an impartial IPS officer from outside the district, alleging a cover-up by local police. They also sought the suspension of the Mangaluru Rural inspector and the police commissioner.
The incident has sparked political and communal tensions, with demands for accountability and fair investigation intensifying.
