The installation of 5G signal jammers at Mangaluru district jail has caused significant disruptions to mobile connectivity in the surrounding areas, affecting both residents and professionals.

Widespread Network Issues

The jammers were set up to curb unauthorized mobile usage by inmates, but their impact has extended beyond the prison walls. Locals have been experiencing frequent call drops and slow internet, making communication difficult.

Doctor Raises Alarm Over Emergency Risks

Cardiologist Dr. Padmanabh Kamath, in an open letter, highlighted the serious consequences of this network disruption. He recounted an incident where a heart attack patient from Horanadu tried contacting him but failed due to the jammer’s interference. A postgraduate student had to inform him in person, allowing him to perform a life-saving angioplasty just in time. Dr. Kamath stressed that such interruptions pose a severe threat to emergency medical services.

Authorities Acknowledge the Issue

Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader assured that the matter has been brought to his attention, and discussions will be held with officials to find a solution. Meanwhile, Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara stated that the five mobile jammers installed at the jail are being upgraded, and the telecom department has been directed to ensure minimal inconvenience to the public.

Call for Immediate Action

Residents and professionals are urging authorities to find a balance between prison security and public convenience to prevent potential tragedies.
