Mangaluru – A longstanding government-aided school in Madakatte, Bantwal Taluk, is at the center of controversy after a former headmaster’s family fenced off part of its premises, allegedly obstructing access for students — including to basic facilities like toilets.
The Madakatte Aided Higher Primary School, established in 1933, has served underprivileged children from nearby villages for decades. However, a land ownership dispute has escalated, causing distress to students and the community.
Though 0.46 and 0.62 acres were officially marked for school purposes by the Assistant Commissioner, the donor family, who originally contributed the land, fenced off a portion during the night. This land includes a toilet building and the only access path, forcing students into unsafe conditions.
Community leaders are alarmed. “Retired educators should be supporting education, not hindering it,” said Shankar Narayan Bhat, school committee secretary. Srikant Padaru, the current committee president, said they were unaware the land wasn’t formally transferred. The school’s alumni and villagers are demanding action and warning of protests if the issue persists.
Development over the years — including new buildings, electricity, and stages — was made possible by donor support. Despite a student decline from 300 to 53, attempts to revamp the school with English-medium classes have met resistance from the donor family.
Committee member Nazeer Kare called the school a beacon for rural youth, urging authorities to intervene before the situation worsens.
