Mangaluru: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has raised serious allegations against Mangalore University (MU), claiming a misappropriation of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) funds meant for hostel construction. According to the ABVP, although Rs 7 crore from the total Rs 20 crore RUSA grant (received between 2013 and 2027) was earmarked for hostel development, no such structures have materialized on campus.
Addressing the media, ABVP’s Suvith Shetty accused the university of submitting false documentation to the government, falsely claiming the construction of separate hostels for male and female students. He stated that when an expert committee visited the campus, they were surprised to find no hostels at all, despite what was shown in the reports.
Following this, the higher education department submitted a detailed report to the Principal Secretary, who in turn sought clarification from the university. However, the response from the Vice-Chancellor was reportedly inadequate and failed to justify the missing infrastructure.
Shetty pointed out that this scandal is just one of many plaguing the university in recent times, further damaging its reputation. He stressed that MU’s legacy, built over four decades with a global alumni base, is being eroded due to such lapses.
ABVP has demanded an immediate investigation and accountability. If authorities fail to act, they plan to launch a “University Bachao Campaign” soon. The group also expressed worry over the financial crisis at MU, highlighting the shutdown of several postgraduate programs this year, with more potentially on the line.
