Alert Wife Outsmarts Fraudster in Cake Order Scam
In Bajpe, a cake shop owner narrowly escaped being duped by a scammer posing as a CISF officer. The scam was thwarted by the quick actions of the owner’s wife.
The fraudster, speaking in Hindi, contacted the owner, claiming to be stationed at Bajpe’s international airport. He urgently requested four kilograms of cake and inquired about the price. The owner quoted Rs 2800.
The caller then asked the owner to stay on the phone while he completed the payment via Google Pay. He also requested the Google Pay number, mentioning that someone would collect the cake. The owner provided his wife’s Google Pay number, after which the line went silent.
Soon after, the owner’s wife received a notification suggesting that Rs 28,000 had been sent. The fraudster called back, explaining that he had mistakenly transferred Rs 28,000 instead of Rs 2800, claiming the additional amount was meant for medical expenses. He requested that Rs 2800 be kept aside, and the remainder returned.
Suspicious, the owner reached out to his wife, who clarified that while an SMS had arrived, her account had not been credited with any amount. When the owner relayed this to the fraudster, he insisted that the money must have been credited if the message had come through.
The owner’s wife received another message, supposedly confirming the Rs 28,000 transfer, but it turned out to be sent by the scammer. Sensing the scam, she informed her husband, and when he tried to call the fraudster back, the line was disconnected.
Thanks to the vigilance of the cake shop owner’s wife, the con was averted.
