Mangaluru: Leader of the Opposition, R Ashoka, criticized the Congress-led government in Karnataka, claiming its future is uncertain. “Although two years remain in their term, there’s no telling when this government might collapse,” Ashoka remarked during a press briefing on Monday.
He alleged political interference in law enforcement, saying, “Every police station has turned into a Congress office. The recent transfers of the Mangaluru City Police Commissioner and the Dakshina Kannada SP were done to ensure the force obeys the government’s directions.”
Ashoka also raised concerns over police conduct, especially towards Hindu activists. Referring to recent late-night visits by police personnel, he said, “On what legal basis are the police knocking on activists’ doors past midnight? Notices must be issued before any such action.”
He further criticized the authorities for not taking sufficient steps to identify and deport illegal immigrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Speaking on the murder of Suhas Shetty, Ashoka suggested a possible link to extremist elements. “We suspect the role of anti-national forces from Kerala and Pakistan. The banned group PFI could be behind this, and it’s crucial to trace their funding sources. We trust the NIA will expose the truth,” he said.
Responding to MLC BK Hariprasad’s remarks about the NIA’s involvement—questioning the need for a probe since Shetty had a criminal background—Ashoka hit back. “There are many ways to define a rowdy-sheeter. DK Shivakumar has several cases and even spent time in jail. Rahul Gandhi is out on bail too. It’s up to the judiciary to decide guilt,” he concluded.
