With the summer season approaching, a crucial meeting of the District Disaster Management Authority was convened on Thursday at the deputy commissioner’s office to strategize precautionary measures for managing drinking water and forest fire risks. The meeting, chaired by DC Mullai Muhilan MP, focused on ensuring the availability of drinking water and preventing fire incidents in forest areas.

Officials from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) reported that the Thumbe Dam in Bantwal, which provides water to the city, currently holds a water level of 5.7 meters, while the AMR Dam has a level of 18.9 meters. In light of these readings, the DC directed all officials to proactively address any potential water shortages in both urban and rural areas, emphasizing the need for quick resolution of public grievances.

The DC further suggested supplying water through tankers if necessary and instructed local urban body chief officers and gram panchayat development officers to oversee the drinking water supply. Ensuring a steady and uninterrupted supply was highlighted as a key priority.

In addition to managing water supply, the DC addressed the risk of forest fires, urging the clearing of dry grass and vegetation along power lines and roadsides to prevent sparks from transformers or wind. Forest officials were advised to conduct field-level meetings and to prepare firefighting equipment in advance to safeguard forest areas.

The meeting was attended by several key officials, including ZP CEO Anandh K, Deputy Conservator of Forests Anthony S Mariyappa, and Additional Deputy Commissioner G Santhosh Kumar.
