Tragedy struck Abbakka Nagara near Kottara in Mangaluru as an auto-rickshaw plunged into an overflowing stormwater drain, resulting in the driver’s untimely death.
The deceased, identified as Deepak (40), met with the unfortunate accident due to heavy rains that inundated the city late Friday night. With no retaining wall in place for the stormwater drain, water overflowed onto the road, creating hazardous conditions. Both the drain and the road were submerged at the same level, posing a significant risk to motorists.
The auto-rickshaw driver, navigating the waterlogged streets, inadvertently veered his vehicle to the side, leading to its fatal descent into the drain.
The mishap underscores the negligence of the Mangaluru City Corporation in failing to construct a retaining wall for the stormwater drain, ultimately resulting in the loss of life.
