Bantwal: The long-neglected B C Road Kaikunje railway station in Bantwal taluk has undergone a complete transformation with a new design and upgraded facilities, thanks to the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment, undertaken at a cost of ₹28.49 crore, has given the station a modern look, significantly enhancing passenger convenience and safety.
Foundation stone laid by Prime Minister
The foundation stone for the station’s reconstruction was virtually laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024. On that occasion, Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel and Bantwal MLA Rajesh Naik Ulepady had attended a brief programme held at the station premises.
Officials have confirmed that the first phase of construction is nearing completion, and the entire project is expected to be ready within the next three to four months.
Passenger-friendly facilities introduced
The redeveloped station has been designed with a strong focus on improving the passenger experience. Key features include:
-
Advance ticket reservation counters
Separate waiting rooms and toilets for men and women
A cafeteria and four catering stalls to serve passengers
Granite flooring in selected areas, with concrete and tiles used in others
CCTV cameras, Wi-Fi connectivity, and LED display screens providing real-time train schedules and movement updates
The main entrance has been built in a circular design, giving the station a distinct architectural identity and drawing public attention.
Infrastructure upgrades completed
In addition to passenger amenities, several crucial infrastructure upgrades have also been implemented. The station has been electrified, and a new foot overbridge has been constructed to ensure safer movement of passengers across platforms.
The presence of police personnel on site has improved the overall security environment. Locals noted that the deployment has helped curb anti-social activities, including drug peddling, which had been a persistent issue in the past.
Public response
Residents and daily commuters have expressed satisfaction with the redevelopment, highlighting that the refurbished station has greatly improved safety and comfort. “Women and children can now travel without fear, thanks to better lighting, security, and modern facilities,” said a commuter.
The once-neglected B C Road Kaikunje station, which had long been criticised for its poor condition, now stands refurbished and gleaming with its upgraded look, symbolising a new era of connectivity and convenience for Bantwal taluk.
