Ahead of Bakrid, the administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts have intensified security measures to prevent illegal cattle transportation and slaughter.

Deputy Commissioners Anandh K (DK) and Vidya Kumari K (Udupi) have directed police to form dedicated teams and install checkposts at district and state borders. Citizens can report suspicious activity by calling 112, and the identity of informants will be kept confidential.

Key measures include:

  • Round-the-clock checkposts
  • Monitoring by special police teams
  • Community meetings with religious leaders at police stations
  • Warnings issued to individuals with prior records of causing disturbances

Officials have invoked the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Ordinance, 2020, under which violators may face:

  • 3–10 years in prison
  • Fines up to ₹10 lakh
  • Property attachment in cases of illegal cattle slaughter

Udupi SP Hariram Shankar confirmed that inspection teams are working across all taluks, coordinating enforcement activities. The focus, said officials, is to ensure that the Bakrid celebrations are peaceful and in full compliance with the law.
