Mangaluru City Police detained the chairman of a local bank on charges related to aiding in a suicide. Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal announced on Wednesday that the individual in question is Anil Lobo, the chairman of MCC Bank. Agrawal shared that the suicide occurred on December 17 in Permanki village, which falls under the Mangalore Rural police jurisdiction. The victim, Manohar Pereira, aged 47, had been living with his older brother, Melburn Pereira, in a house they had purchased a decade ago, financed through a loan from MCC Bank.
Due to financial hardships caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, Melburn Pereira had been unable to keep up with the loan payments, resulting in the bank taking possession of the house two years ago. This situation caused significant emotional turmoil for Manohar, who also suffered two heart attacks during this period. In February 2023, a donation of Rs 15 lakh was transferred to Manohar’s account by Sr. Christine from a charitable organization. Manohar, in coordination with Anil Lobo, tried to use this money to settle the debt and reclaim the home. However, it is alleged that Lobo withdrew Rs 9 lakh from the account through a self-issued cheque, leaving the loan unpaid and causing more distress for Manohar.
Although the property was returned to the family about six months ago, the financial strain continued. On Wednesday afternoon, Manohar reportedly took his own life, leaving behind a video blaming Lobo for the tragedy. A case has been filed, and an investigation is ongoing to clarify the circumstances.
