Bengaluru-Mangaluru Expressway to Slash Travel Time by 7-8 Hours
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is set to revolutionize travel between Bengaluru – Mangaluru by constructing a new expressway that will connect the two cities via Hassan. Once finished, the expressway will drastically cut travel time by 7 to 8 hours, significantly improving connectivity between these major hubs.
The ambitious project is being carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in partnership with the Karnataka Public Works Department. Spanning 335 km, the expressway will feature four to six lanes and is expected to provide a smooth, fast route for commuters. Construction work is scheduled to begin in 2028, marking an important milestone in enhancing transportation infrastructure in the state.
Currently, the journey between Bengaluru and Mangaluru can be lengthy and difficult, especially during the monsoon season when landslides and other disruptions impact the existing route. This new expressway will address those issues, reducing congestion and travel delays. In July, MoRTH invited bids to select a consultant for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). By November, nine firms had submitted bids, and the contract is expected to be awarded in 2025. The selected firm will have 540 days to finalize the DPR, with construction set to begin by 2028.
This high-speed corridor will not only reduce travel times but also strengthen Karnataka’s economic ties by facilitating smoother transportation. The project promises to significantly improve the state’s road network, benefiting both residents and businesses alike.
