Mangaluru: In a major educational shift, the Karnataka state government has approved the introduction of English medium classes in 4,134 government primary schools starting from the 2025–26 academic year. Among them, 115 schools in Dakshina Kannada (DK) district will now offer English medium alongside existing language options.

From 2019 to 2024, bilingual education—offering both Kannada and English—was rolled out in 120 government schools in DK. With 3 more added recently, the tally now stands at 123 bilingual schools.

These schools will run separate sections for Kannada and English mediums, allowing students to opt for their preferred language of instruction. Classes will be led by teachers trained in the respective mediums.

In DK, bilingual classes were introduced in:

  • 48 schools (2019–20)

  • 34 schools (2020–21)

  • 38 schools (2024–25)

  • Now, with 115 more schools added, this marks a significant expansion in English education accessibility. Currently, the district has 892 government schools, including both lower and higher primary levels.

    This latest order covers government primary schools, Karnataka Public Schools, and PM Shri Schools. In each taluk, the top 15 schools with highest student numbers were shortlisted for the English medium upgrade.

    Taluk-wise approvals include:

    • 20 in Bantwal

  • 16 in Beltangady

  • 15 each in Mangaluru North, Moodbidri, and Sullia

  • 16 in Mangaluru South

  • 18 in Puttur
