On the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Paul Saldanha, blessed the newly renovated Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows at the Bishop’s House in Kodialbail, on May 31.
Originally blessed in 1857, the chapel holds deep spiritual and historical significance. Over the years, it saw a facade renewal in 1963 and a flooring upgrade a decade ago. This year’s extensive restoration included a new front elevation, roof repairs, wall plastering, fresh paint, electrical rewiring, modern sound system, and enhanced lighting—restoring the chapel’s solemn beauty while maintaining its sacred legacy.
The Thanksgiving Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Emeritus Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Vicar General Msgr Maxim Noronha, Chancellor Fr Victor D’Souza, Chaplain Fr Jagadish Pinto, and several clergy from the Episcopal and City Deaneries. Many religious sisters and lay faithful participated in the celebration.
After the Eucharist, a felicitation ceremony honored major benefactors, including Mr. Michael D’Souza, Abu Dhabi-based philanthropist, and the Sodality of the Immaculate Conception, Mangalore, for their financial and spiritual support.
Bishop Saldanha described the chapel as a “spiritual womb of grace,” highlighting the Latin phrase Cor Meum Moerens (“My heart weeps”) on the facade—symbolizing Mary’s compassion.
The chapel now stands as a renewed beacon of peace and prayer, inviting all into Mary’s consoling presence.
