BJP worker’s tragic end sparks political firestorm over ‘targeted FIRs’
Vinay Somaiah, a 35-year-old BJP member, took his life on Friday, allegedly overwhelmed by shame after being arrested for a comment linked to Karnataka Congress MLA A.S. Ponnanna. He ended his life at the BJP office in HBR Layout, Bengaluru, leaving behind a detailed note highlighting distress over what he described as politically-driven false complaints.
In his final message, Vinay pleaded for his death to be a wake-up call against “motivated FIRs.” He urged the police to use discretion before filing cases and questioned the ethics of acting on unverified accusations.
Vinay’s suicide note, shared in a WhatsApp group before his death, accused Congress worker Tennera Maina of orchestrating the complaint. He named MLAs A.S. Ponnanna and Manthar Gowda, accusing them of harassment, misuse of influence, and character assassination. He said he was wrongly targeted as an admin of a group where someone else had posted controversial content.
He described mental trauma, police intimidation, and social media shaming — even after securing bail and a High Court stay. He also cited past incidents involving Maina, demanding investigations.
Vinay appealed to fellow BJP members to support his grieving family and thanked leaders who stood by him. His note ended with a plea for justice and dignity for those falsely accused.
BJP leaders have condemned the incident, calling for accountability. Vinay leaves behind his wife, child, and elderly parents.
