Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta underscored the need to safeguard fragile coastal areas and islands while promoting tourism. Speaking at the Dakshina Kannada Coastal Tourism workshop, he warned against illegal sand mining near islands, which could lead to their collapse, similar to deteriorating bridges. He urged authorities to implement protective measures, particularly for heritage sites.
MP Chowta welcomed recent policy shifts recognizing tourism as an industry, emphasizing that development should involve private investment and community participation. He highlighted the keen interest of investors in expanding tourism infrastructure in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi. To showcase the region’s potential, he proposed identifying three flagship tourism events.
He also called for fast-tracking proposals under the PRASAD scheme to enhance pilgrimage tourism in Dakshina Kannada. Addressing connectivity concerns, he stressed the need for forest clearance for the Shiradi Ghat road project, which would significantly boost tourist access. Additionally, he cautioned against the unplanned construction of four fishing jetties along the 68km coastline, citing potential coastal erosion risks.
MP Chowta dismissed concerns about Mangaluru’s safety, asserting that negative perceptions were exaggerated. He stated that as tourism expands, demand for nightlife would naturally grow.
Tourism department officials discussed plans for a digital tourism platform, integrating travel information, event calendars, and a network of local guides, artists, and experience providers to enhance cultural tourism.
