Capt Brijesh Chowta Champions Defence Push in Dakshina Kannada Amid Indo-Pak Tensions
Amid growing tensions between India and Pakistan, Dakshina Kannada MP Capt Brijesh Chowta is advancing initiatives to strengthen military recruitment and presence in the region. In a recent meeting with Maj Gen Hari B Pillai, ADG (Recruiting – States), HQ Recruiting Zone, Bengaluru, he emphasized enhancing enlistment efforts and proposed the establishment of a military base in Dakshina Kannada.
Capt Chowta told TOI that his immediate goal is to secure a permanent, easily accessible location for the Army Recruitment Office in Mangaluru, replacing its current rented premises in Kulur. “Raising Mangaluru’s visibility on India’s defence map begins with infrastructure,” he stated.
Efforts are also in progress to bring a T-55 tank, a historic asset from the 1971 Indo-Pak war, to Mangaluru. It will be installed at a high-traffic city location to inspire public interest and pride in the armed forces.
Another milestone project in the pipeline is India’s first Coast Guard Academy in Mangaluru, currently awaiting cabinet approval. Additionally, Capt Chowta has engaged in dialogue with the Defence Ministry and private sector to establish a Sainik School in the region under a Public-Private Partnership model.
While acknowledging the lower military enlistment rates compared to northern India, Chowta praised the steady contribution of Dakshina Kannada youth and its vibrant ex-servicemen network. He aims to boost awareness about defence careers through active involvement of NCC cadets and alumni, encouraging more youth to pursue service in the armed forces.
