A cargo vessel named MSV Salaamath, sailing from Mangaluru to Lakshadweep, sank roughly 60 nautical miles southwest of Mangaluru after being hit by a powerful wave. All crew members aboard the vessel were safely rescued by the Indian Coast Guard.
The ship departed from Mangaluru Port on May 12 and was scheduled to reach Kadmat Island by May 18. However, at 5:30 am IST on May 14, the vessel encountered a massive wave that led to its sudden submersion. The exact cause of the mishap remains under investigation.
MSV Salaamath was transporting cement, construction materials, and food supplies essential for island residents. As water began to flood the ship, the crew managed to escape into a small dinghy for safety.
A passing merchant vessel spotted the drifting dinghy and immediately alerted the Indian Coast Guard base in Mangaluru. Responding without delay, the ICGS Vikram, on regular patrol duty, reached the location, rescued the stranded seafarers, and provided them with emergency medical assistance.
The rescued crew was brought back safely to the New Mangalore Port on Thursday, thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard team.
Authorities are continuing to examine the circumstances of the accident and assess the environmental and logistical impact of the sunken vessel.
