Puttur: The Dakshina Kannada district superintendent of police, Dr Arun K, has announced that a charge memo will be issued against the Puttur Rural police inspector in connection with an illegal cattle transport case reported near Bellichadavu, Ishwaramangala. The disciplinary action follows claims of procedural lapses and failure to maintain proper caution during the handling of the incident.
According to reports, local leader Arun Kumar Puthila arrived at the spot following the police action and discovered that one of the cattle had died. Concerned about the welfare of the remaining animals, Puthila asked whether they could be unloaded to prevent further distress.
A constable at the scene reportedly informed the inspector about the situation over the phone. Puthila then requested to speak directly with the inspector, who allegedly gave his consent to unload the animals.
Lapse in protocol and investigation concerns
Authorities later observed that the inspector’s decision to allow the unloading of the cattle was made without following established procedural safeguards. This, according to the district police, compromised the integrity of the crime scene and created an opportunity for the site to be used for political activity.
The official statement added that this failure to exercise caution and maintain control over the scene was considered a serious lapse in judgment on the inspector’s part.
Administrative action to follow
As a result, the district police administration has decided to issue a charge memo to the inspector, initiating formal disciplinary proceedings. The action is intended to serve as a reminder to officers to strictly adhere to protocol, particularly in cases that are sensitive and politically charged.
SP Dr Arun K reiterated that any deviation from standard operating procedures would invite accountability measures. He also emphasised the need for officers to ensure transparency and maintain neutrality while dealing with law enforcement matters that attract public attention.
Background of the case
The incident of illegal cattle transportation near Bellichadavu, Ishwaramangala, had drawn local attention after animal welfare concerns were raised. The alleged mishandling of the situation led to criticism and prompted a review of police conduct during the operation.
