Mangaluru/Udupi: Although rainfall intensity has dipped slightly in coastal Karnataka, flooding and destruction continue to plague Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. Numerous homes remain submerged, and flood-related disruptions persist across low-lying villages.
In a dramatic near-tragedy on Sunday, two men were swept into a river near Hittilapela bridge in Savanalu village. Sathish of Hittilapela and Sanjeeva Poojary from Sullyodi miraculously survived after their two-wheeler got stuck while trying to cross near Koodujalu.
Adyapady village, situated along the Phalguni River, was among the worst affected. Several homes were flooded, and farmlands submerged, resulting in extensive damage. Floodwaters also severed access to homes, isolating parts of the village.
Heavy rains pounded Ullal taluk, damaging multiple houses. Bala in Dakshina Kannada district alone saw 215 mm rainfall in 24 hours till Sunday morning.
In Udupi, intense rainfall disrupted normal life. Chitturu village in Kundapur taluk topped the charts with 274 mm, followed by Hakladi (265 mm) and Heruru (261 mm) in Byndoor taluk.
Flooding also hit agricultural lands and rural roads in Shiroor, Yedthare, Kalavadi, Bijoor, Uppunda, and more. Authorities used boats to evacuate residents, and a relief centre was established at Bantara Bhavana in Yedthare. Over 35 electric poles collapsed across Byndoor taluk.
In Kundapura’s Kamalashile area, water entered the Maranakatte Brahmalingeshwara Temple premises. The Hebri–Madamakki road was cut off, forcing long detours for travelers heading toward Hebri.
