Commemorating World Blood Donor Day 2025 at Yenepoya Hospital
A call for voluntary blood donation
On 16 June 2025, the Blood Centre of Yenepoya Medical College Hospital (YMCH), Deralakatte, commemorated World Blood Donor Day with a vibrant programme at the EMD Auditorium on its university campus. The event underscored the importance of safe blood donation and community participation in saving lives.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr Khathija Dilshad MP, District TB & AIDS Control Officer, who highlighted that while the district’s annual blood requirement is roughly 1% of its population, collection efforts have impressively reached close to 3%. However, she noted that shortages persist due to the district’s status as a tertiary care hub catering to patients from surrounding districts and states.
Dr Khathija urged every individual to encourage family and friends to donate blood voluntarily at least four times a year. She also highlighted the health benefits of regular donation, both for the donor and the recipient.
Advocacy for education and awareness
Dr Habib Rahaman A.A, Medical Superintendent of YMCH, stressed that “blood is irreplaceable—only blood can replace blood.” His speech focused on the need to eliminate prevalent myths in India that discourage people from donating, particularly misconceptions related to weakness post-donation and gender-based doubts about eligibility.
Annual report and community initiatives
Dr Vidya Rekha R Kamath, Chief of the YMCH Blood Centre, welcomed the gathering and presented the Annual Report for 2024. It showcased key statistics, achievements, and outreach initiatives of the centre. A pledge-taking ceremony reaffirmed the commitment of attendees towards voluntary blood donation and ensuring safe transfusion practices.
One of the main highlights of the programme was the felicitation of donor organisations, recognised for their unwavering support and contributions to blood donation drives. Their dedication has been instrumental in building a strong base of regular donors in the region.
Engaging the youth in service
The hospital also conducted competitions such as essays, posters, and quizzes to engage students in promoting blood donation awareness. Prizes were awarded to winners during the event to encourage further participation and community involvement.
In the lead-up to the celebration, the Blood Centre had observed a Voluntary Blood Donation Week from 9 to 15 June 2025. The week-long campaign saw active participation from donors and volunteers, amplifying the message of safe and selfless donation.
Gratitude and closing remarks
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Dr Vidya Rekha R Kamath, who expressed her appreciation to dignitaries, healthcare professionals, students, and support staff. She reaffirmed the Blood Centre’s commitment to creating a strong culture of donation and awareness in the region.
The 2025 celebration of World Blood Donor Day at Yenepoya was more than just a commemorative event—it was a reaffirmation of the hospital’s vision to serve society with compassion, responsibility, and excellence.
