Mangaluru: A formal complaint has been lodged with the Karnataka Medical Council against Dr. Ashok Pandit, a Consultant Urologist at Yenepoya Hospital, Mangaluru, for alleged unethical conduct. The complaint, filed by Jeevan Periera of Dakshina Kannada, accuses Dr. Pandit of extending the hospitalisation of Anil Lobo, Chairman of MCC Bank, for an unusually long period under questionable circumstances.

The allegations stem from Lobo’s 20-day hospital stay under Dr. Pandit’s care for hydrocele treatment, a condition generally managed as a daycare procedure. Lobo is currently in judicial custody, accused of abetting the suicide of Manohar Pierra, Periera’s brother.

In his letter to the Karnataka Medical Council, Periera has called for a thorough investigation into Dr. Pandit’s actions and urged the cancellation of his medical registration if the allegations are substantiated. The complainant has expressed concerns over potential misuse of medical facilities to influence judicial processes, citing the prolonged hospitalisation as unwarranted.

Questions over medical ethics

Hydrocele, a condition involving fluid accumulation in the scrotum, is typically treated as an outpatient procedure. The extended duration of Lobo’s hospitalisation raises concerns about Dr. Pandit’s professional judgment and motives.

“Dr. Pandit, with over 25 years of experience in urology, is expected to adhere to the highest ethical standards in patient care. The alleged misconduct is alarming and a breach of trust,” Periera stated in his complaint.

Call for swift action

Periera has requested the Karnataka Medical Council to urgently address the issue and ensure the integrity of the medical profession is upheld. He emphasised the importance of transparency and evidence-based care in such cases, especially when involving high-profile individuals and sensitive judicial matters.

The Karnataka Medical Council has yet to respond publicly to the allegations or confirm the initiation of an inquiry. This case highlights concerns about the potential misuse of medical resources and ethics in patient care.
